Industrial Internet of Things enables the connection of sensors, devices and systems and the rapid communications of data among them. Such data provide unprecedented opportunities for smart manufacturing, including real time monitoring and optimal decision making, as well as data analysis challenges due to data volume and variety. This talk will provide an overview of smart manufacturing characteristics and the need of data analytics research for achieving smart manufacturing. In addition, connection among customers, manufacturers and suppliers is also creating a new paradigm of personalized manufacturing where costumers actively participate in the design and fabrication of products or product components. Research in personalized manufacturing will also be highlighted.
The talk will be followed by a Q&A session where Dr. Hu will answer questions, including ones related to career paths, society fellows, and the National Academy of Engineering
Dr. S. Jack Hu is the J. Reid and Polly Anderson Professor of Manufacturing and Vice President for Research at the University of Michigan. He is also Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering. Dr. Hu’s teaching and research interests are in manufacturing systems and statistical quality methods. He is the recipient of various awards, including the William T. Ennor Manufacturing Technology Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Gold Medal from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), and several best paper awards. He is a fellow of ASME, SME, and the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP). Hu was elected a member of the US National Academy of Engineering in 2015 and a foreign member of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2017.
